By now, the name CALIBAN should be familiar to most people who are either interested in metal or are often at festivals. Over the last few years, the band has constantly been able to gain an ever-growing fanbase – and accordingly, many were also looking forward to the latest work “Elements”. A look at the producers of the album shows how linked the Metal scene is: Andy Posdziech from Any Given Day, Sebastian “Sushi” Biesler from Eskimo Callboy and Callan Orr from Dream On, Dreamer helped the band this time. No less impressive is the guest list for this album: Competition was yesterday, today you support yourself!
Nevertheless, the well-known accusation that the CALIBAN are now more likely to use Clear Vocals is that they are not more “true” enough, but just just Sellout. Of course, it’s best to get an idea of what you think, but we think this album is very far from a sellout. Already the opener “This is War” blunders on it without much ado, and then flow into a refrain, which is made to fists-in-the-air-stretching. Even the only German-language song “I bleed for you” with the support of Matthi from Nasty and “Sushi” from Eskimo Callboy is keeping up this pace – sometimes even fast sprinting ahead you can hardly understand the screams. Later on more Modern Metal sounds like in “My Madness”. Some songs start out shallower, then get started again, as well as “Before Late Becomes Never”. The vocals still contain clear vocals, then suddenly the deep, distinctive growls of none other than CJ McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder ! Of course you have to be on it, but to commit such a metal giant for his cause, is for a band already a big deal! No less surprising then is the support of Brian “Head” Welch of Korn in the song “Masquerade”. This song also gives the song its very own stamp. Do CALIBAN need these guest singers all? Not really, the songs have consistently high quality even without them. At the same time, the playing time is 55 minutes. Right here is the (only) catch on the matter. Previous fans of the band will be happy about the same 15 songs, for all the others that may seem a bit too much, which may be due to the homogenous sound. A little less would have done it, nevertheless: Sellout? We did not really notice that. Although there are often clear vocals, these are usually accompanied by screams and growls. And the album should not be too shallow even for the toughest CALIBAN fans. The band comes from Essen, but here they sound just as bombastic as the international competition!
