Annual Review 2017: Julia!

Annual Review Julia

And another year around. Many different developments have emerged in society: finally, “marriage for all” was introduced (and did not take long), and debates about a “third gender” were finally started, highlighting the antiquity of gender-binaryism. #Metoo started a debate about the big problem of sexual assaults of all kinds. The two biggest troublemakers in recent years have once again shown their best side: populism and terror. While the AfD moves to the Bundestag with an astonishing 12.6%, a radical idiot blows up at an Ariana Grande concert – taking the lives of 22 music fans. So only a few topics from the past year, many of which one would like to hear never again. In contrast to the music of the last twelve months! Rarely have I been able to discover such great new artists and albums within a year. In particular, INVSN and Prada Meinhoff, who are among my personal top newcomers, were able to inspire me live. Other acts such as Madness or Alex Lahey, however, I got to know about new albums. Leaderboards are always a difficult thing, mine would probably look different every day, but here’s a try:

Top 10 albums:
1. Kettcar – I Vs. We

Kettcar - I Vs. We album of the year, just the right lyrics at the right time, plus a variety of music. (Review)

2. Fjort – Couleur

FJØRT - Couleur Second place goes to a German band that boasts strong lyrics. Impressive development, hard head-to-head race with Kettcar. (Review)

third Blood Command – Cult Drugs

Blood Command - Cult Drugs Biggest musical surprise as I have not been able to do anything with this band so far. Absolutely outstanding songwriting gave me the album immediately.

4. Arcade Fire – Everything Now

Arcade Fire - Everything Now Few albums have caused so many disagreements this year. I’m a big fan of this version of Arcade Fire, which is always reminiscent of ABBA. (Review)

. 5 Nothing But Thieves – Broken Machine

Nothing But Thieves - Broken Machine The Übersong “Amsterdam” raised the expectations – Nothing But Thieves filled them completely, entertaining from start to finish. (Review)

. 6 The XX – I See You
7. Enter Shikari – The Spark (Review)
8. Love A – Nothing is New
9. K. Flay – Every Where is Some Where (Review)
10. Wolf Alice – Visions of a Life (Review)
